2016 Workshop: TIE GCM users group workshop

Long title
Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model users group workshop
Conveners
Stan Solomon
Astrid Maute
Description

This informal workshop is an opportunity for developers and users of the NCAR Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model to discuss the new release of Version 2.0 (with high-resolution capability), to ask questions both scientific and technical, and to discuss problems, issues, validation, data comparison, and opportunities for future development. Although initially tutorial in format, discussion and debate are welcome, as are contributed talks describing model-data comparisons, other global numerical modeling, global empirical models, and using these models with data assimilation techniques. We will also describe support for the upcoming NASA missions ICON and GOLD, and new model capabilities being developed specifically for interpreting these future observations.

Agenda

Short presentations with lots of time for questions and discussion

1. Stan Solomon: TIE-GCM v. 2.0

2. Eric Sutton:Helium

3. Astrid Maute: Lower Boundary Options

4. Doug Drob: The Good, the Bad, the Ugly

5. Xing Ming: CCMC & TEC

Justification

This workshop responds to challange #6 of the 2011 CEDAR Strategic Plan, "Manage, mine, and manipulate geosciences/geospace data and models" by promoting broad use of community modeling capabilities, including especially by grad students and postdocs. It also addresses Decadal Survey goals through support of tools for analysis of data from the ICON and GOLD missions.
