A simulation of the generation of a polar-cap patch by particle precipitation
One of the long-standing challenges in ionospheric polar-cap science is understanding how various mechanisms contribute to the generation, structuring, and dynamics of polar cap patches (PCPs). We present a study using the Gemini3D model to simulate PCP generation via particle precipitation, using the observational study by Oksavik et al. (2006) as a benchmark. Our findings demonstrate that particle precipitation with typical energy characteristics can indeed produce polar-cap patches; however, the patch's overall features are highly sensitive to the specific properties of the precipitation. These results reinforce the viability of particle precipitation as a generation mechanism, though the extent of its contribution to observed F-region structuring in polar regions remains an open question.
